Since the announcement of ‘Steppe Defender’ last year in December, Russia has threatened NATO, calling the exercise a threat to peace, and a clear provocation. This was followed by threats from EUCOM Commander, and have now come to a head as Russia now increases its presence in Belarus amid ‘Steppe Defender’. Exact numbers of Russians is unclear but EUCOM notes it is no threat to a strong and united NATO. However the increased Russian troop movements come at a time when the brunt of the war in Ukraine is at a new height. Zelensky, while encouraging of Europe’s increased effort on defense, noted that without Ukraine in any future defense plans or infrastructure that a key front is being ignored. Standing before EU Parliament Zelensky boosted about the price his country has paid to hold Russia back, but without them, the very threat he faces now, would be attacking Poland and Lithuania. This came before he was interrupted by the Hungarian delegation walking out, in protest of Zelensky’s request for further funds.

The Border in Belarus is not the only rapidly militarizing border either, Russian build-up is being reported across the Finish and Norwegian borders as well, this comes alongside reports of increased Russian momentum in Ukraine, with a change in doctrine. Many are assuming a further strengthening of Russia’s western border after recent agreements with the SCO becoming a fully flagged military alliance. This would allow Russia to take much of its Asian garrisons and forces and push them West. Regardless, things seem under control, and it is looking like the Exercise will wrap up at the beginning of June.
