The Shanghai Cooperation Organization has recently held an emergency summit in Shanghai, in order to discuss recent events in Syria. With the Biden government taking a stronger stance against Russia, and China, the alliance which was initially built to combat terrorism is seeking a possible escalation of commitment to provide joint security in the case of American aggression against either. Notably, it was not just SCO members in attendance with invitations having been sent to countries like North Korea, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia, North Korea, Thailand, Venezuela and Vietnam to name a few. Pushing a policy of collective security, one phrase thrown around was “An Alliance to rival NATO” with the main outcome of this talk having been the establishment of a Joint SCO Military command in Novosibirsk, alongside plans for a meeting between multiple high ranking general of all nations who signed, it is believed the world we the establishment of a new major alliance in the world.

Between the SCO and BRICS members of the U.S. senate and EU parliament have decried the blatant movement towards war by Russia and China. Many have noted that nothing good can come of a powerblock against NATO, with many noting NATO is an entirely defensive alliance, and all Wars they have been involved in so far have been those to protect peace loving people across the globe. These points have fallen on deaf ears across the SCO however, as a second round of meetings in Novosibirsk are to be expected next week.
